What could be the biggest wonder?

There is a story in Mahabharat. When Pandavas, being Yudhishthir, Bheem, Arjun, Nakul and Sahdev, were exiled by the Kaurwas and were leading their life incognito in some forest, they felt thirsty. Yudhishthir sent one of them to fetch some water from the nearby pond. He did not return. The remaining ones too were sent one by one but none of them came back. At the end, Yudhishthir himself went there but there was no trace of any one of his four brothers. Before Yudhishthir could try to fetch some water from the pond, there appeared a demon and stopped him telling ‘Look, I have decided that I will permit only that person to fetch water from the pond who could answer my question. Since all your brothers who tried to fetch water from this pond were killed by me one by one for the reason that they failed to answer my question, you too have to meet the same fate but before I kill you, I am giving you a chance to answer my question. If you answer my question satisfactorily, you can take water from the pond and I will bring your brothers back to their life; if not, I obviously will kill you too’. Yudhishthir asked for the question. The question the demon raised was ‘What is the biggest wonder in this world?’ Yudhishthir replied ‘People see others dying every day but they continue committing wrongs after wrongs to satisfy their lust without any restraint’. The demon was happy. He restored life to all the brothers of Yudhishthir allowing them to fetch as much water from the pond as they wanted.

Om Prakash Chautala, four times Chief Minister of Haryana, and his son Ajay Chautala, an MLA, have been awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment by the CBI Court in the junior basic teachers recruitment scandal perpetrated at their instance. There are 45 others, including an IAS rank officer, who have been awarded punishment varying from individual to individual. Rigorous punishment to the guilty is not a new thing, nor there is any secret in it, it is some thing that happens every day, and Chautala and his bogie of accomplices must have known it well before hand. Despite that he involved himself in a criminal conspiracy is like the same wonder as answered by Yudhishthir.

  1. Thing is, people have different personalities. As defined by Myer-Briggs. They [Myer-Briggs; Briggs the mother. Myer the daughter] Defined them along with Carl Jung. Who did a lot of the work, through psycho-analysis. With 16 different types, it is quite revealing to see how the demographics of personality actually are. The dichotomies of the way that a person’s personality, dictate the degree to which we relate. Some personalities, do not have very developed sense of judgment; of right or wrong. It’s just the way they are. Not everyone is able to see morality, in their every day action. They seem to instinctively know, that some behaviour has to be hidden. These people seem to believe that morality is for others and they can somehow remain hidden. It does seem warped? To personalities who are able to co-operate with others; in the beliefs of a better world, etc. That there are rules in society, meant for the betterment of all.

Essentially, it is my belief. People who cannot keep the law are somehow stunted emotionally? That emotional connect with the idea of fair play, etc. Is missing. They are egocentric and likely unstable in relationships, etc. DNA determines our bodies and so on. Yet personality seems to be something we are born with. As stated by me earlier. The demographics of personality are very revealing. Society is built for the four types who dominate. The other 12 types have to fit in as best as they can.

It was Plato who summed it up rather well. 2 1/2 thousand years ago. “The good do not need laws telling them what to do and the bad will just find ways around them”.

  3. SIR, I RECALLED THAT THE SAME STORY WAS ONCE NARRATED BY SHRI ATAL BEHARI VAJPAYEE DURING 1977 LOK SABHA ELECTIONS. I GOT A CHANCE TO HEAR THE SPEECH OF SHRI ATAL BEHARI VAJPAYEE IN ONE OF HIS ELECTION MEETING HELD AT LAJPAT NAGAR IMMEDIATELY AFTER EMERGENCY WAS LIFTED AND GENERAL ELECTIONS DECLARED IN 1977. SHRI VAJPAYEE AFTER NARRATING THE ABOVE STORY OF FIVE PANDAVAS, GOING TO FETCH WATER ONE BY ONE, SAID THAT IF THE SAME DEMON TODAY ASK ME THE SAME QUESTION, MY REPLY WOULD BE THAT IF PEOPLE OF MY COUNTRY, AFTER SEEING THE CONGRESS RULE AND THE ATROCITIES COMMITTED BY THE GOVERNMENT DURING EMERGENCY, WOULD NOW AGAIN VOTE FOR CONGRESS, IT WOULD BE BIGGEST WONDER IN THIS WORLD.

  4. nice comparison, but these politicians are not part of wonders. They feel they have the power and right to be acquitted from anything illegal that they have done which makes them more involved in any of such cases.

  5. Sir Mahabharata fully covers the every aspect of human life and provides reasonable answers for all the questions of all the times. Unfortunately all the negative characters of Mahabharata are found in plenty now. Om Prakash Chautala nay Om Prakash Chotta is a small character many more are there and they need to be destinated properly.
