SBI–Officers movement backfires!

To say that officers movement in State Bank of India is back to square one is not enough, it has in fact taken a turn in a worst order. Who is to blame is altogether a different matter, but failure and success both are always measured in terms of the leadership. If leadership is in a double mind, or their loyalty to membership shifts to a secondary position for reasons best known to themselves, it’s certainly the leadership only to blame. The top rank representatives of the officers federation are penalised for the reason that they staged a peaceful dharna during lunch recess, an instance not heard earlier. This is a matter of fundamentals so far as a trade union is concerned, and is a matter of foremost importance in the context of its existence. The remedial actions the leadership chose against the top management are just laughable. They decided that each circle union of theirs being the affiliate of the federation should file a case in the local High Court of Judicature seeking redressal against victimisation. Even if a single High Court out of all in the country gives an adverse judgement, which possibility is always a likelihood when a bigger number of them is involved, it is enough to strengthen the position of the management instead of giving any relief to the petitioners. Whosoever might have taken the initiative for such a move in the leadership, the action seems primarily as the one in favour of the management in State Bank of India, and not at all in the interest of the officers so transferred. Moreover, as per rules of the Bank, transfers are taken as a matter of primary administrative measure, and have nothing to do with any sort of victimisation. This too gives a bigger handle to the management only without even slightly supporting the federation. There is no surprise if the membership as a whole belonging to the federation raises a finger of suspicion against the very doings of the leadership in the adoption of their strategies for the purpose, as they are more pro the management instead of being an affirmation to what should have been in the interest of the victimised officers. It was not at all difficult for the leadership to foresee such an eventuality if they had necessary will for the desired direction.

  1. Repected neelkanthji you have rightly narrated the trade union leadership, if the leader is strong and for the benefit of the employees, he/she will will be respected and his command will be on the employees. The leaders must win the hearts of the employes, but i have seen for the last few years the role of the union leaders have changed, they feel themself that they are the masters and the employees are their subordintes tyhey dictate the terms while listening to their greivances/ speciallt at the time of transfer. I know in one circle the general secretay was retired and he was honoured withHonda city car as farewel party , is this a unionism, the management knows all this and has struck the hot iron, we should give the strong leadership so that the fate of the employees can be saved in near future. thanks

  2. Federation has lost its credit. In recent past it is quite like ladies sangeet. People come and occupy their seats, do the chorus, receive their return gifts and vanish. Thats all.

  3. SIR, NUMBER OF TIMES I HAVE COMMENTED ON THE STATE OF AFFAIRS OF OFFICERS’ FEDERATION ON YOUR VARIOUS BLOGS DURING LAST FEW MONTHS. YOU HAVE ONCE AGAIN DEPICTED A VERY CORRECT AND TRUE PICTURE OF PRESENT DAYS OFFICERS’ FEDERATION. IT IS REALLY UNBELIEVABLE AND I FAIL TO UNDERSTAND THE REASONS FOR THEIR SORRY STATE OF AFFAIRS. IT SEEMS THAT NO ASSOCIATION/FEDERATION OF OFFICERS EXISTS AT ANY LEVEL. I UNDERSTAND THAT IN DELHI CIRCLE, THE MANAGEMENT HAS ALREADY TAKEN A DECISION TO TRANSFER ALL THE CIRCLE OFFICE BEARERS OF SBI OFFICERS’ ASSOCIATION, WHO ARE PRESENTLY POSTED IN DIFFERENT ESTABLISHMENTS IN THE LHO COMPLEX, TO DIFFERENT BRANCHES LOCATED AT FAR OFF PLACES. WHAT IS GOING TO BE THE FUTURE OF THE OFFICERS’ ASSOCIATIONS/FEDERATION, ONLY GOD KNOWS, THERE IS NO SIGN IN SIGHT, OF ANY IMPROVEMENT OR THINGS GETTING BETTER AT THEIR END, IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE LEADERSHIP IS SO SCARED OF THE MANAGEMENT THAT NOBODY IS READY TO RAISE HIS VOICE AGAINST THE EXCESSES BEING COMMITTED BY THE MANAGEMENT AGAINST MEMBERS/LEADERS. I CAN ONLY PRAY THAT MAY GOD BLESS THE OFFICERS’ FEDERATION.

  4. Officers movement backfires? Never . But where is the movement? Sir nothing is left to say after a very correct comment of Sri Shyam Mohan Mishra. Many a times I have heard in your speeches that trade unionism is not a medical advice but those having sacrificing instinct only should come forward to lead the movement. The membership can not be blamed for the exiting situation the responsibility lies only on leadership. This is danger signal for all irrespective of the cadre. The banking sector feels proud in witnessing the M.R. Awasthi Era in trade union movement but now it seems cursed to see the affairs of today. ‘Improve yourselves Ye Leaders’ otherwise all the sacrifices made in the past will go in vain and the fate of the banking workforce shall lead to uncertainty.

  5. Leadership has lost its credibility. It stinks of corruption and filthiness. At crucial time the leader disappears into ICU, cut off from affiliates and general members alike. He has laid this mighty organization in death bed. His ‘joke’ that he is in hospital hold good for AISBOF.Only voluntary vacation by General Secretary of Federation will bring cheer to the aggrieved members.

  7. The Federation degeneration began and was initiated seven months ago under the leadership of the present General Secretary. He panders to a coterie and takes decision to satsify them. He has not even allowed the committee to meet and decide who should be the President the mighty body of 80000 officers, a post lying vacant since 2nd October. May be that suits his style of functioning autocratic and despot to the core. Activists do not know how he can retreat into oblivion when memebers and leaders of the affilaites are threatened by the mangement. He has not only castrated AISBOF, he has made AIBOC a mockery by not convening a single meeting of its Executive Committee since he came to assume the leadership.
He is aMaster didger and never attends the General Council of any affiliates of the Confederation citing flimsy excuses after getting his name printed on invitation card ,the only message poor officer comrades get that AIBOC has a leader who is an escapist to the core.

  8. It seems that such decision of SBI Officer’s Fedreation is taken just to shirk out its responsibility or just to befool the membership in general only.It appears that the Fedration has surrendered before Management.I am deeply shocked to know that this Fedration has murged it self in to dust.I think that the decision for dissolution of Fedration would have been more graceful in lieu of moving court cases in different high courts.I am further of the view that they should not be allowed to survive who can not even resist for their fundamental right.
In fact the Officers Fedration or Association was framed in the era of Com. M.R.Awasthi when he was leading & handling SBISA/ Fedration.Rather it would be better to say that in comparision of SBISA or Fedration Officers Association /Fedration was framed.Founders of Officers organisation rightly observed the pressure and position of Com. M.R.Awasthi on the top management but they could not observe the devotion & contribution of Com. Awasthi for his organisation and it is the tragedy of Officers organisation.

  9. I think your every word is going to be proved as TRUE in the near future. You have very rightly observed and stated that if they loose their case in even a single High Court, which is ought to happen, it is going to strengthen the position of the Bank’s management and to weaken the position of the Officers Federation/Association more & more. Further, every finger in officers community has already raised against the strategies and very intentions of the Federation. If the top leaders do not have any capability or do not know how to handle the present situation, they should not feel shy to come to legendry leaders like you and take their guidance. After all, it is a question of their survival too. Members have no confidence in the Association now. They, in general, say that if the leaders are not able to save themselves, how will they protect rights of the membership and save them from the wrong doings of the management.

What has happened they deserved it.They are responsible for disgracing the organisation and its members. In the name of Immunity they stay lifelong at one metro centre.
