To say that officers movement in State Bank of India is back to square one is not enough, it has in fact taken a turn in a worst order. Who is to blame is altogether a different matter, but failure and success both are always measured in terms of the leadership. If leadership is in a double mind, or their loyalty to membership shifts to a secondary position for reasons best known to themselves, it’s certainly the leadership only to blame. The top rank representatives of the officers federation are penalised for the reason that they staged a peaceful dharna during lunch recess, an instance not heard earlier. This is a matter of fundamentals so far as a trade union is concerned, and is a matter of foremost importance in the context of its existence. The remedial actions the leadership chose against the top management are just laughable. They decided that each circle union of theirs being the affiliate of the federation should file a case in the local High Court of Judicature seeking redressal against victimisation. Even if a single High Court out of all in the country gives an adverse judgement, which possibility is always a likelihood when a bigger number of them is involved, it is enough to strengthen the position of the management instead of giving any relief to the petitioners. Whosoever might have taken the initiative for such a move in the leadership, the action seems primarily as the one in favour of the management in State Bank of India, and not at all in the interest of the officers so transferred. Moreover, as per rules of the Bank, transfers are taken as a matter of primary administrative measure, and have nothing to do with any sort of victimisation. This too gives a bigger handle to the management only without even slightly supporting the federation. There is no surprise if the membership as a whole belonging to the federation raises a finger of suspicion against the very doings of the leadership in the adoption of their strategies for the purpose, as they are more pro the management instead of being an affirmation to what should have been in the interest of the victimised officers. It was not at all difficult for the leadership to foresee such an eventuality if they had necessary will for the desired direction.
