Destiny element and Immanent will:

In his works, mostly novels, Thomas Hardy has very often talked of the two factors –Destiny element and Immanent will. In fact Thomas Hardy had hardly any faith in God unlike Shakespeare who had immense faith in Him. Even those who don’t believe in God do believe that there is some factor after all in the Universe that commands every thing in the world. This very factor is taken by Hardy as Destiny supported by Immanent will. Both these elements are denotative of the factor that something that has to occur does occur and there is no other power on earth which can take care of them. Service to mankind is taken as a great tool of satisfaction and peace by both the groups –believers in God and non-believers in Him, but the modus operandi in both the cases is different. Those who believe in God consider service to the mankind as His command almost in all religions, and the non-believers do it as an urge springing up from their own heart and mind without any intervention from any outsider factor. This group does not believe in taking any credit for such a service, they rather go by the conviction that this too is something that had to happen. Maqbool Fida Hussain’s observation in this context is noteworthy through his own words “…Destiny takes care of every thing in the world”. Actually there is hardly any difference between the two –Destiny and Immanent will. Happening wise, both are the same with a slight variation at the implementational level. Destiny indicates a direct move, whereas Immanent Will speaks of some factor existing some where that commands a particular action. Whatever be the factors commanding actions, the fact remains that the world goes on moving, and how it happens has been and continues to be a mystery, a mystery that is eternal.

    1. Good post. God sems to be a concept and how it functions is a devine mystry. May be that is the reason that His understanding varies for individual to individual. Somehow I feel quite close to your elaboration. Thank you for this blog.
