Thackerays in Mumbai are prominently known well as the ones who claim themselves to be the champions of the cause of all the marathas in Maharashtra. The question that arises naturally is whether their own bonafides as such command eligibility enough for the purpose on the face of the fact that their own ancestors belonged to some other states much beyond Mumbai. Raj Thackeray’s grand father named Prabodhankar, it is said, himself authored a book making a mention of it there in, as emphatically confirmed by the Congress General Secretary, Digvijay Singh. As per statement made by Lalu Prasad Yadav of Bihar, Raj Thackeray’s grand father Prabodhankar belonged to a Kayastha family from Magadh region of Bihar and he migrated to Mumbai in search of some livelihood. He finally got settled there and the rest is the history thereafter. Many a locals in Mumbai hold a view that castes like Bhonsles and Deshmukhs belong to original Marathas, but Thackerays are the subsequent version added to it politically. A telefilm titled as Veer Shivaji and released some time back too confirms this. Who are the real sons of the soil is the matter. If what has been quoted above is the truth, it is just out of question that Thackerays are the original marathas, they are rather Biharis ancestrally; if a man from Bihar gets settled in Mumbai as a maharashtrian, then all the people from Bihar, who are working there, or are running some business, have every right to call themselves as maharashtrian in which event the hue and cry that is currently raised every now and then in respect of maharashtrian and non-maharashtrian is all just meaningless.
