Go any where, there are unions. Go to some market for shopping, there is union of dealers, hire an auto rickshaw, he belongs to some union, you have to park your vehicle by the side of a road, there is union of unauthorised contractors who charge the owner a parking fee at their own rates, go even to a burial place, the people who perform the last rites have their union. And so is the case of students in universities and colleges with their own union every where. Need for some union basically arose when there were onslaughts against labour by their employers. This was a typical relationship between exploiters and the exploited lot warranting a channel to remedy the situation, hence unions were born. The employer employee relationship is a global phenomenon and the employees in both private and public sector do need a compacted forum in the form of some union to look after their interest and see that there is no exploitation of labour. A worker does labour and is paid for it. The amount of work and the amount paid as remuneration for it, both have to be balanced. When this balance is disturbed, the trouble starts. This balance has to tilt in favour of the workers as that is the expectation. This is an area where the need of some union is felt and this becomes the starting point for them. In colleges and universities, there is nothing like an employee employer relationship –there the relationship is that of the teacher and the taught, where any amount of exploitation like between labour and the management is just out of question. Normally the unions in academic institutions are formed at some political behest or the other. For many a politicians, the students union is a hinterland to their own platform, which they exploit most. The student leaders too take it as their potential political career. In the process, the student unions, in most of the cases, convert into gangs. The very purpose of pursuing studies is thus lost. Students are the future of the country and they are more supposed to harness themselves to the task of studies instead of developing different warring camps as some gang or the other.
